Theatre Careers

Being a Theatre technician would be a job I would actually like to do. I have really enjoyed working on sets and sound and lights for this play and its the first time I have ever done this. Doing that for a living would be fun. To pursue a career in theatre tech. I would probably have to go to technical school to learn about sound and lighting which would also be fun and interesting and now this career is one I'm actually considering learning about and pursuing.

RENT

I liked Rent which surprised me I really didn't think I was going to like it. It was definitely a pivotal production because of all the elements that were put into production to make the play turn out the way it did. It had a lot of things that surprised me that i didn't think it would have like lesbians and a drag queen which definitely made it an out of the box play and I think one of the reasons I liked it is because it wasn't what I had expected. I had really expected some kind of cheesy play about people living together and how they had to pay rent but I was wrong and I really enjoyed it.

HIstory of Rent

I was interested to find out that the play RENT has parts based off of the lives of the people that wrote it and created it. It seems like it's a very pivotal musical play because of everything that went into it like the new music, the director, and producer. With out this play many directors might not have started looking more to musical plays instead of normal nothing but acting plays. This play was also a major success it won many awards and has made probably millions of dollars. I think this is a very pivotal Broadway Production.

Make up in Theatre

In a play like the Lion King make-up is extremely important to make the characters more animal like and to give them more of an animal color. If they had not used make up for the Lion King it would be very difficult to tell which characters where which. For our play make-up will be important to make our actors more Asian looking since Fa Mulan is a Chinese story. Also, both make-up and costumes allow girls to play boys and boys to play girls. Make-up is important because it can make someone look completely different than they do in real life. If make-up wasn't a part of theatre some characters in different plays wouldn't be very believable to an audience.

Elements of Theatre

All of the elements of theatre I have noticed allow the theatre to work properly and a performance to go smoothly. Lighting for example if the theatre wasn't lighted correctly the cast members might do something wrong or the audience might not see something important to the play. Also if a theatre didn't have proper sound nobody could hear each other and the audience would have no idea what was going on. Another thing is if there where no costumes or makeup and audience member wouldn't know one character from another which is why all elements of theatre are important.

Peter Pan

Peter Pan was okay it wasnt the best play I have ever seen. They definatly should have had someone else play Peter Pan because it was a grown man and it was creepy. I also think Tinkerbell should have been a real person instead of just a little light floating around on the wall behind everybody. Most of the story was completely different from the Disney movie which also made me not care for it. The technical part of it the zip line thing that was used to make the actors fly was cool there wasn't very much different lighting used it was mostly brightly lit. I liked STOMP much better.

Set Day

Well set day wasn't bad at all. Most of the things that we did I have done before helping my dad because hes a contracter and theres a lot of work like that. There are two things I am interested in learning more about and they are the sound board system and the rope system for the curtains and other stage props. The technology part of the theatre i think will help make it a better show and add to the design and make it original in some ways.

STOMP

STOMP was extremely good and it had a more musical and comical direction that was really great. I enjoyed how the performers made it funny too and how they would mess around with each other on stage with the things they were using. It was very cool how they made the rhythms with all those common, everyday things. I think it would be really hard to keep a beat and timing as good as they did. I noticed this performance after the blog about Kabuki. Stomp was strongly based on Kabuki both with the music and dance. These elements were made ven more interesting by the performaer's timing. Their skill and talent were very obvious. STOMP was incredibly good.

Greek vs Kabuki

I think Kabuki theatre would be more interesting to see than Greek because Kabuki seems more towards making and enjoying music. Greek theater is made up more of just spoken dialogue on acient stories. This type of performance gets very old to me, I like more action and music. STOMP really appealed to me because of is high energy music and the comedy that the directors used.

Kabuki Theatre

Kabuki is different than most theatre because it was created by women. It is stragne though that women where banned from being a part of the production because they were thought of as inferior back then. It seems that Kabuki has influenced many kinds of theatre productions like STOMP because Kabuki was a skilled type of dance and song theatre which also describes STOMP.

Mulan

http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/5082/culture.html

Mulan, historians say, might be a real person. To me that is really neat because I used to watch that movie when I was little and I really enjoyed it. I never thought it was based on somthing that could be true. This makes me wonder whether or not there are some other children's movies that could be based on real characters or events. Many are too far fetched like Hercules to be true. He couldn't be a real person but I do know the story is based on Greek Mythology. It is intersesting to find out that children's movies are based on these kind of things.

musical theatre

http://www.theatrehistory.com/american/musical030.html

This was the website I used to research musical theatre. It was interesting because it talked a lot about where the musical theater in America came from such as the influence of Greek theatre. This also made me realize that we have influence from Greek culture in almost everything. I'm not sure why a lot of our culture is based off of Greek material and design but, it is interesting. I think I wol like to add Greece to a future travel destination.

Week 1 introduction

Hi,
I'm Braxton Herbert, I'm not really sure what to expect from this. I think it will be cool to learn about the technical part of theatre and how to use the sound boards and lights and any other technical things there are. The only other time I have been on stage is when I was little and I don't really remember it and I'm not going to be on stage during this so it won't be better or worse.
